MaintenanceA few days ago Matt at Webmaster-Source and Michael at Pro Blog Design published articles about optimizing the load time of a blog and plugins to get more comments

Influenced by their articles I decided to review and optimize my own blog. Some of the mentioned plugins and optimizations I had already in use, a few I added as result of reading said articles:

You could call this some kind of heavy maintenance, so I’m now interested on some feedback. How do you like the new comment plugins? Does the site load slower or faster or did it stay the same? Any reply is much appreciated, especially feedback about the loading time of my blog :)

Update:
I moved all javascript used on my site to the foot which should reduce the loading time a lot more.
Please let me know if something is now broken :)

Happy New Year 2008

... published January 1, 2008

New Year 2008I wish you a happy new year.

My fellow bloggers Matt at Webmaster- Source and Michael at Pro Blog Design reviewed their year 2007, including a list of their best articles. Since I’m new to this business and my plans didn’t turn out like intended I will hold it a bit like Slevi while doing some kind of review.

What happened 2007?

In the first few months of the year I decided to re-do my website and it got a design close to this one. However, after playing with “AJAX” and doing other “fancy” things with my website I decided to start an own blog and trying to become a problogger, if possible.

So I got my own blog. That was on April the 22nd. You can read the start article here, please excuse the lack of professionalism as it was my first blog post ever. After writing some more articles I happened to stumbleupon to either a post at ProBlogDesign or Webmaster-Source. I don’t remember exactly where it was, or do I remember the article. Anyway, the article made me review my blogging style.

The quality of my articles was…uh…ok, yet the environment didn’t fit. I then made an own design instead of using the (although modified) standard wordpress design.
Another article made crop the categories and doing some other tweaks. I also installed some plugins and some more work made the current design of my blog.

Now as the look was professional I needed to work on the content. I believe the categories I chose are ok, but then real life went bad on me. It turned out that I had almost no time at the end and my last professional article is dated September 15th. You can find it under the title “Useful Tools for validating HTML, CSS and Accessibility“.
What will 2008 bring?

Merry Christmas

... published December 25, 2007

Merry Christmas! Frohe Weihnachten!Frohe Weihnachten (= Merry Christmas) to everyone out there in the world.

We in Germany just got visited by Santa Clause or the “Weihnachtsmann” and right now I’m enjoying my presents. (I need to figure out what I can do with my 500GB external HDD…). I’m aware that some of you have to wait until tomorrow, but I’m also aware that there are people in the world who are not celebrate Christmas as we do.

So let’s hold on for a minute and think about those people. People who are homeless, poor, sick, alone, far away from home…the list goes on. While people like you and I are enjoying their holidays those people would give everything to have the opportunities we have. I bet you also have/had a hard time to find a gift for a loved one because we have everything you actually need. The people I’m talking about…well, those are not able to bother with such a problem. They are happy if they got enough food/water/money to live another day.

And there are other people.

Some of them suffer from an illness which can’t be cured. They are glad that they got the chance to enjoy another Christmas with their loved ones…and what are their wishes? Most likely that either a cure is found or they won’t have to suffer much longer.

And there are other people.

Some of them are celebrating their Christmas being a soldier in a war zone. They are kept far away from their loved ones, hoping that they won’t get killed until they are due for heading back home some time next year…

I hope this article makes some sense to you as I’m just writing down my thoughts.
Be merry, but also think of other people. People not so lucky to enjoy Christmas like you do.

BlogCast - Pilot Episode needs YOUR suggestion

... published November 19, 2007

BlogCast - On AirFor those of you who don’t visit Webmaster-Source a short information on what the hell I’m talking about in the headline:

Matt at Webmaster-Source started a new project which adds to his blog. This project is a podcast about blogging and webmastering as these podcasts are quite rare. After searching for a name and volunteers for his podcast he choose BlogCast as title.
I don’t know how many other people volunteered to be a guest in his podcast, but I do know that I received the honor to be his first guest in the pilot episode. I guess this is the right place to say thanks to Matt!

Back to the headline

It is easier and faster to quote Matt right away:

What Do YOU Want Us to Talk About?

Marco of Ruelicke.net and I will be talking about a blog-related topic on the upcoming pilot episode of BlogCast. The only problem is neither of us have decided on a topic yet. :D

So, here’s my question for all of you: What do you want us to talk about?

Is there something that you want to know more about? Leave a comment, and we’ll consider your idea.

Of course you are welcome to leave a comment on my blog, but it would be a little bit easier for us, if you also leave a comment at Webmaster-Source.

Ambulance in front of the Blindow-AkademieA 17 year old female student of the Blindow-Berufsakademie was seriously injured by an 20 year old male classmate after a confrontation at the private school. As police spokesman Siegfried Koch said, the victim suffered from multiple cut and stab injuries at body and face. Also, the offender has to be treated at the hospital under observation - he has taken sleeping pills additionally to alcohol, after his own statement. It is still unclear what led to the bloody confrontation.

The principal of the Blindow-Akademie heard the screams of the 17 year old girl from the corridor in the school, so the police. “As he wanted to help her, he found her lying and bleeding in front of the entrance. The offender, who was standing next to her, had a firearm and a knife in his hands” said Koch. The police reacted to the emergency call at the vocational school at 13:00 local time with a large squad. The officers were equipped with bullet prove vests and machine guns. Koch justified: “We take such emergencies very serious.”
